Tappin Roots SE Texas

Tappin Roots (TR) is an environmental internship program for Black identified high school students in the Greater Beaumont area. Tappin Roots was created by and is comprised of a collaborative group of Black and Indigenous lead organizations.

TR seeks to train and empower the next generation of environmental leaders and community leaders using:

  • Storytelling

  • Mentorship

  • Career exploration

  • Place-based learning

  • Healing practices

The TR partners hope to connect young Black Texans closer to nature, and closer to their cultural history. Each Intern is eligible to receive up to $4000 based on their participation in the following:

  1. Orientation

  2. Monthly Symposiums 

  3. Mandatory Training Week 

  4.  Hours worked with their assigned partner organization

After orientation Interns will participate in monthly career and environmental justice symposiums led by professionals of color. Learning opportunities will include Indigenous based Traditional Ecological Knowledge and SE Texas’ Black history. They will implement culturally relevant skills and knowledge they acquire to educate others about the natural world. Interns will participate in summer nature-based education work with one of the community based partners, including a week of mandatory training.
